UFC 259: Islam Makhachev dominates and finishes Drew Dober
UFC 259: Islam Makhachev utterly dominates Drew Dober.
Islam Makhachev defeated Drew Dober via submission (arm-triangle choke), Round 3 – 1:37 at UFC 259 on Saturday, March 6, 2021, live from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV.
“I deserved someone from top-five now. I cannot be quiet. Seven-win streak now, please I need some tough guy. Tony Ferguson, please, I’ll be ready. I’ll be ready for anyone,” said Makhachev.
Dober opened the fight by attacking Makhachev’s legs, landing a pair of leg kicks. Makhachev decided he didn’t want to get kicked anymore and took Dober down with relative ease. Makhachev controlled the remainder of the round, moving from side mount to full mount and forcing Dober to defend the entire time. Dober made an attempt to get back to his feet but almost gave up his back. Makhachev transitioned to an armbar that Dober was able to defend before the horn ended the round.
Makhachev went for another takedown. Dober initially defended it but ultimately ended up on the ground again. Up against the fence, Dober tried to use it to his advantage but Makhachev was able to pull him off of the fence and get on top. Makhachev landed several massive elbows as he controlling almost the entire five minutes of the round.
Dober entered the third round knowing that he was going to need a finish to win. Makhachev landed a knee and then overpowered Dober, bringing him to the canvas again. Dober landed some nice elbows from the bottom but Makhachev continued to apply pressure. From half guard, Makhachev applied an arm-triangle choke that eventually forced Dober to tap out.
It took almost five years but Makhachev and Dober finally fought. The two were originally scheduled to fight on April 16, 2016, but the fight was canceled after Makhachev failed a drug test.
Saturday’s fight was the first in a year and a half for Makhachev. COVID-19 and a staph infection delayed Makhachev’s return to the Octagon. The Russian was the UFC’s 14th ranked lightweight and looks like he will be a future champion after his dominating performance.
Dober entered UFC 259 on a three-fight winning streak, winning all three fights by knockout. The loss is a step back for Dober, who was completely outclassed but will have the opportunity to bounce back in his next fight.
