Ron Sikder returns home, held, bailed later

Sikder Group managing director Ron Haque Sikder on Friday secured bail at a Dhaka court hours after he was arrested on arrival from Dubai at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

A Detective Branch team arrested Ron Sikder who returned home at about 10:00am taking an Air Arabia flight, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Detective Branch (Gulshan division) Moshiur Rahman.

Ron’s father and Sikder Group chairman Zainul Haque Sikder’s body also landed at the Dhaka Airport in another flight from Dubai, said the airport director Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan.

Ron and his brother Dipu Sikder fled to Bangkok on a private jet on May 25, a week after they were accused of assaulting two officers of Export-Import Bank of Bangladesh Limited in a case.

Following the arrest, the DB placed him before a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka at about 3:00pm without any prayer to question him in police custody, said APP Hemayet Uddin.

Metropolitan magistrate Asheque Imam granted Ron Sikder interim bail with Tk 5,000 bond till March 10, said DMP deputy commissioner for persecution Jafar Hossain.

After producing him before the court, Ron Sikder’s lawyer appealed for his bail.

The court’s general recording officer sub-inspector Alamgir Hossain said that the police and an assistant public prosecutor opposed the bail plea. The court then granted him interim bail till March 10.

APP Hemayet Uddin said that the accused’s lawyer told the court that the case was baseless and sought Ron’s bail on humanitarian ground as his father had died recently and he returned Dhaka to attend the funeral.

Police and prosecution, however, told the court that Ron is a fugitive and the case is related to abduction, shooting at a man and forcing him to put signature; therefore, the accused should not granted bail. The court granted bail on humanitarian ground after hearing arguments, said the APP.

Serajul Islam, director of Export Import Bank, also known as Exim Bank, alleged in the case statement on May 19, 2020, that Sikder Group MD and his brother abducted, tortured and intimidated Exim Bank managing director Md Haider Ali Mia and additional managing director Md Firoz Hossain on May 7 as they went to visit Sikder Group properties pledged as the security for a loan.

Exim Bank officers were taken to Rupganj and Purbachal to assess the assets pledged for collateral against the loan.

Since the officers refused to evaluate the assets proposed for mortgage as desired by Sikder Group, Haider Ali Mia was shot at a location in Purbachal area but he escaped unhurt, the case statement said.

The case statement also said that both the bank officers were later forcibly taken to a house in Dhaka’s Banani area on that day where they were threatened and tortured and later released in the evening after taking their signatures on a blank sheet of paper in presence of Ron and his brother.

The brothers fled to Bangkok on a private jet on May 25, a week after they were accused of assaulting two officers of Export-Import Bank of Bangladesh Limited in a case.

Sikder Group owns R&R Aviation, which has one Hawker 800A for the overseas charter flight and often used on medical emergency purpose.

An officer of Dhaka airport then told New Age that their flight took off with two passengers on emergency medical purpose.

The brother sought anticipatory bail while staying abroad from a virtual bench in the case filed on charges of abducting, torturing and threatening.

On July 20, the HC fined Ron and Dipu for seeking anticipatory bail from abroad.

Rejecting their bail petition, the HC ordered each of the brothers to donate 5,000 PPE as fine to the prime minister’s fund in two weeks.
